Nano brows, explained
healing, longevity, and how they compare to microblading

Nano brows are the technique I reach for most in the studio, and the one clients ask about most. This guide covers what they are, who they suit, how the appointment works, what healing really looks like, and how they stack up against microblading. Straight answers, from the chair.
What are nano brows?
Nano brows are a semi-permanent brow tattoo created with a machine and a single ultra-fine needle. The artist draws individual hair strokes that follow the direction of your natural brow hair, so the healed result reads as fuller, tidier brows rather than makeup. Because the strokes are placed with a needle finer than a strand of hair, the finish is the most natural of any brow tattoo technique.
You will also hear them called nano strokes, machine hair strokes, or nanoblading. Different names, same idea: hair-like strokes, done with a machine.
Nano brows vs microblading: what is the difference?
Both techniques create hair strokes. The difference is the tool, and the tool changes everything.
Microblading cuts strokes into the skin with a hand blade and deposits pigment in the cut. Nano brows place pigment with a single fine needle on a machine, the same way a tattoo artist works, but far more delicately. That means:
Nano is gentler on the skin. A needle implants pigment; a blade slices. Less trauma means better healing and less risk of scar tissue over repeated sessions.
Nano suits more skin types. On oily skin, microblading strokes tend to blur and heal powdery. Nano strokes stay crisp on most skin types, including oily skin.
Nano lasts longer. Microblading often fades within a year; nano brows typically hold up to 2 years before a refresh.
Nano ages better. Because the pigment sits more consistently, healed strokes stay defined instead of spreading into a grey shadow.
This is why I offer nano brows at the studio rather than microblading. If you have been quoted for microblading elsewhere, it is worth comparing healed photos from both techniques before you commit. Not fresh photos: healed ones.
Who are nano brows for?
Most people. They work beautifully on sparse brows, over-plucked brows from the thin-brow years, uneven growth, and brows that have simply faded with time. They are suitable for most skin types, including oily skin, and they work best on skin that has no previous brow tattoo, because clean skin lets each stroke heal crisp.
If you do have old brow work, it depends on how saturated and what colour it is. Send a clear, makeup-free photo with your booking request and I will tell you honestly what is possible. And people with certain medical conditions may be excluded from the service or may need consent from their doctor first; mention anything relevant when you book and we confirm eligibility before your appointment.
What happens at a nano brows appointment?
At Bonafide Beauty the appointment runs about 4 hours, and most of that is not tattooing. We start with mapping: measuring your face and drawing the shape until you approve it in the mirror. Nothing gets tattooed until you love the shape. Then colour: pigment is blended for your skin tone and brow hair, not picked off a shelf. Numbing cream goes on before the work starts and gets topped up throughout, so most clients describe the feeling as light scratching.
A 6 to 8 week touch-up appointment completes the process. The first session builds the shape and colour; the touch-up perfects whatever healed lighter. At our studio that touch-up is included in the price, not an add-on.
How do nano brows heal?
Expect your brows to look darker and bolder for the first several days. That is pigment sitting in the top layer of skin, and it is temporary. Over the first two weeks the brows soften and lightly flake. Do not pick the flakes; let them fall on their own, or you can pull pigment out with them.
Around weeks three and four the strokes can look lighter than you want. This is the stage that worries people, and it is normal: the skin is still settling over the pigment. By about six weeks the true healed colour is visible, which is exactly when the included touch-up happens.
Aftercare is simple and comes with your booking confirmation: keep the area clean and dry at first, skip makeup on the brows while they heal, and stay out of pools, saunas, and direct sun for the first couple of weeks.
How long do nano brows last?
Up to 2 years, depending on your skin, your lifestyle, and sun exposure. Oily skin and lots of sun soften the strokes faster; drier skin and diligent SPF keep them crisp longer. The fade is gradual, so you will not wake up one day with no brows. Most clients book a refresh session somewhere around the 1 to 1.5 year mark to keep the strokes defined.
How much do nano brows cost in Vancouver?
At Bonafide Beauty, nano brows are $550 CAD for the roughly 4 hour initial appointment, and that includes the 6 to 8 week touch-up. Around Vancouver you will see nano brows priced anywhere from about $400 to $900 or more depending on the artist's experience, so when you compare quotes, always check two things: whether the touch-up is included, and what the artist's healed work looks like.
If a soft, filled-in look suits you better than hair strokes, ombre powder brows are $450, and combination brows, which blend nano strokes at the front with a powdered tail, are $500. All include the touch-up. The full menu is on the services and pricing page.
