The Different Semi Permanent Brow Tattoo Techniques

Understanding The Different Brow Tattoo Techniques: Microblading, Ombre Brows, and Nanobrows

As a permanent makeup artist, I believe your brows can 100% make or break your overall appearance. The eyes may be the window to the soul, but the brows...the brows are the window frame. First let's clarify that all of these techniques I am about to explain are considered semi-permanent, meaning unlike a regular tattoo, they will fade away over time. Depending on the technique they can last anywhere from a year to 3 years. With various techniques available—microblading, ombre brows, and nanobrows—it can be challenging to determine which method is best suited for each individual. Let’s break down these techniques and explore how to choose the right one for your unique needs. Fun Fact: You can also do a combination of the mircoblading or nanobrow technique along with the Ombre brow technique to create a result that is a mix between the two, this is conveniently know as “Combination brows.

The Techniques:

Microblading: The Natural-Looking Hair Stroke

Microblading is a technique that uses a handheld tool to create hair-like strokes in the brow area. This method is ideal for clients looking for a natural finish and is particularly effective for those with sparse or over-plucked brows.

Who is it best for?

  • Sparse or Thinning Brows: If you have gaps or very fine brows, microblading can fill in these areas, creating a more defined and natural look.

  • Normal to Dry Skin Types: Microblading works best on normal to dry skin, as oily skin can cause the pigment to fade prematurely. Excess oil can blur the strokes over time, leading to less defined results.

  • Natural Aesthetic: Those who prefer a soft, realistic appearance will appreciate the detail microblading provides.

Nanobrows: The Next Level of Precision

Nanobrows are a newer technique that utilizes a permanent makeup machine to create ultra-fine hair-like strokes with even more precision than microblading. This is a great option for clients with oily skin who are not candidates for microblading but still want to achieve those natural life like results.

Who is it best for?

  • Detailed, Natural Finish: Clients seeking a natural look with extremely precise and life like hair strokes with appreciate this technique

  • All Skin Types: Nanobrows are suitable for all skin types, including oily skin, and can hold up well over time, making them a versatile option. Unlike microblading, nanobrows are a good options for pretty much all skin types!

  • Long-Lasting Results: This technique is designed for longevity and can resist fading, providing excellent results for clients.

Ombre Brows: The Soft Powdered Look

Ombre brows, also known as powder brows, involve using a permanent makeup machine to deposit pigment in a gradient effect, starting lighter at the front and becoming darker toward the tail. This technique mimics the look of makeup and provides a soft, powdered finish.

Who is it best for?

  • Dramatic or Defined Look: Clients looking for a bolder appearance, similar to wearing makeup, will find ombre brows appealing.

  • Oily Skin: This technique can be particularly effective for clients with oily skin types, as the machine application allows for more controlled pigment distribution.

  • All Skin Types: Ombre brows work well on all skin types, providing versatility for various client needs.

Considerations: If a client prefers a more natural look or has a strong preference for hair strokes, they might lean away from this technique.

Choosing the Right Technique for Each Client

When I am determining which brow technique is best for a client, several factors should be considered:

  1. Desired Look: I always discuss with the client their vision for their brows. Do they want a natural appearance or something more defined? Or a combination of two techniques! As mentioned at the beginning of this post, combination brows are a style created by utilizing the ombre technique alongside either the nano or microblading to create a more defined tail of the brow, while keeping the front of the brows more natural with life like hair strokes.

  2. Skin Type: Next, with the help of the client I will assess their skin type. This can impact the choice of technique. Oily skin may benefit from ombre brows or nanobrows, while normal to dry skin might be more suited for microblading.

  3. Maintenance and Longevity: We will discuss the longevity of each technique and how maintenance differs. Some techniques may require touch-ups sooner than others.

Final notes!

Each brow technique—microblading, ombre brows, and nanobrows—offer unique benefits, making it essential to choose the right method for each individual client.
