Are You a Candidate For Lip Blush?

Who Should Get Lip Blush and Who Shouldn't? A Professional's Perspective...

As a permanent makeup artist based in Vancouver, Canada I have a wide variety of clientele as well as potential clients. One of the most important aspects of my job as an artist is accessing a clients desires and potential limitations. The lip blush treatment can enhance clients natural colour and shape of the lips. However, it's essential to recognize that not everyone is suited for this procedure. Let’s dive into the factors that determine whether someone is a good candidate for lip blush.

Ideal Candidates for Lip Blush

  1. Those Seeking a Natural Enhancement

Lip blush is perfect for clients who want a subtle, natural enhancement. If you're looking to improve your lip colour or define your lip shape without a dramatic change, this treatment is for you. It’s an excellent choice for those who prefer a low-maintenance beauty routine. It is important to note that over lining the lips in any major way is not a recommended practice when it comes to lip blush. Over lining of the lips can lead to results that look uneven in colour and intensity.

  2. Clients with Uneven Lip Color

If you have lips that are uneven in colour or tone, lip blush can help create a more balanced appearance. This procedure can camouflage pigmentation irregularities and enhance your overall look.

  3. Individuals with Thinning Lips

As we age, lips tend to lose volume and colour. While lip blush does not physically add volume to the lips, it can create the illusion of fuller lips by defining the border and enhancing the overall shape. This makes it a great option for those with thinning lips.

  4. Pale lips with undefined vermilion borders due to lip fillers

Often times when people have had lip fillers repeatedly done over the years, the lips can loose their natural colouring causing them to look pale. The over expansion of the lip tissue can also lead to a lack of vermilion border as well as undefined cupids bow. When this happens clients can feel like no matter how much filler that have done, their lips never have that full pouty look due to the lack of colouring, making them blend into their surrounding face skin. Lip blush can add back a natural flush to their lips and help to redefine the shape of their borders and cupids bow.

  1. Busy Lifestyles

For clients who are always on the go and want to reduce the time spent on their daily makeup routine, lip blush offers a long-lasting solution. With proper care, results can last anywhere from one to three years.

  1. People with Allergies to Lip Makeup

If you struggle with allergies to traditional lipsticks or glosses, lip blush is a hypoallergenic alternative that allows you to enjoy beautifully coloured lips without irritation.

Who Might Not Be a Good Candidate?

  1. Pregnant or Nursing Women

It’s generally recommended that pregnant or nursing women avoid cosmetic procedures, including lip blush. With any procedure that comes with a risk of infection ( even if the risk is very small) pregnant or breastfeeding women have to potential to spread that infection to the baby.

  2. Individuals with Certain Medical Conditions

Clients with autoimmune disorders, uncontrolled diabetes, or bleeding disorders should consult their healthcare provider before considering lip blush. These conditions can impact healing and overall results.

  3. Active Cold Sores or Oral Herpes

If you have a history of cold sores, it's crucial to disclose this during your consultation. We may recommend a preventative antiviral medication to reduce the risk of an outbreak during or after the procedure. A history of cold sores does NOT exclude someone from the lip blush procedure, rather extra precautionary steps are taken to minimize a potential outbreak.

  4. Those with Very Thin or Delicate Skin

Clients with extremely thin or delicate skin may not be ideal candidates for lip blush, as the procedure can cause increased sensitivity or complications. A thorough consultation will help determine the best approach.

  5. Heavy Smokers

Smoking can affect the healing process and the longevity of the pigment. While not a strict disqualifier, heavy smokers should be aware that their results may fade more quickly due to reduced blood flow and exposure to nicotine.
